Apparently one of the most important art-fests in the world, Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. From 16th to 21st June 2004
The giant, armless and legless blow-up doll in Messeplatz heralded the arrival of the show. The breadth of 'art' on display is wide in terms of styles, less wide in terms prices, though apparently some pieces can be bought for less than 5,000 Euro...
Okay maybe I was wrong about the prices €5,000 to millions (yes!) is quite some breadth, unfortunately I'm at the other (wrong) end of the scale. Galeries from all over the world are represented here, New York, London, Paris etc., etc., the 'creme-de-la-creme' are all here.
I had a spare 3 hours and frankly this is enough to pass-by perhaps only one third of what's on display. Next year I'll buy a two-day ticket. I was accosted on the entrance and told I couldn't take my camera inside. It turned out that there were so many cameras inside that I decided to go back and take my discreet DSC-P5. I didn't use any flash, just setting the camera at 400 ASA. The pictures are not bad, but yet again another missed opportunity for my big camera...
What the pictures (unfortunately) don't convey are the stunningly vibrant colours of much of the art, still, my favouroute photos (as opposed to favourite art - not the same thing) are these: ... 1 ... 2 ... 3 ...
